The ancient Romans dipped rolled papyrus in melted cattle and sheep tallow or beeswax to form candles.  Candle artisans in colonial America perfected a process for boiling berries of bayberry bushes, which produced a clean sweet-smelling candle.  The 1880’s saw the development of paraffin for candle usage.
